Filosofikafeen Hybris

Lars von Triers «Melancholia» (2011) er en enorm film som tar opp emner som familie, undergang, angst, frykt og natur. Von Trier har lagd et overvelmende og mangefasettert undergangsdrama, akkompagnert av Richard Wagners «Tristan und Isolde», med skuespillere som Charlotte Gainsbourg, Kirsten Dunst, John Hurt og Kiefer Sutherland.

Filosofikaféen Hybris inviterer til filmkveld på Ad Fontes hvor vi ser Melancholia. Deretter skal emeritus Knut Ågotnes holde et innlegg om filmen, og til sist åpner vi for videre diskusjon av tematikken.

Filmvisningen vil begynne klokken 19:00 og vare i ca. 2,5 timer. Ad Fontes står for alkoholservering (ingen medbrakt). Ta med en venn eller bekjent, dette blir en storslagen aften!

Have we lost our ability for critical thought? Why do scientists exaggerate the degree of certainty when they present their research to the public? How can we handle uncertainty in scientific explanations when faced with complex problems that concern the lives of many people?

This coming tuesday the renowned mathematician and philosopher Silvio
Funtowicz will give a talk to the guests of Hybris. He will discuss the relationship between the demand for certainty in scientific research and the elements of uncertainty that always accompany it.

Unambiguous research results function as arguments of authority in policy-making, even though few scientific results are unambiguous. Do we lack a language that can communicate this uncertainty adequately? Limited models of explanation in science poses challenges for political decisions in for instance environmental issues. Why should scientific experts claim the final word in issues where the scientific knowledge is insufficient or limited by uncertainty? Are there better ways to inform deciscions in such instances?

As a former member of the European Commision Joint Research Centre Funtowcz have done reseach in the field of environmental and technological risks in relation to policy-making. He has developed a model for risk management – , in collaboration with Jerome Ravetz. It is an honour to invite you to an evening where you can learn more about the fascinating thoughts of this philosopher.
